nourishing rare together

rarewell is an app for families managing PKU and other rare metabolic conditions.

the today screen: phenylalanine 461 mg of an 800 mg daily allowance, 339 mg remaining, with calories, protein, carbs and fat, and breakfast logged underneath.

every picture here is the app itself, with a demo child's data.

the pantry: 21 recipes and 9 batches at the top, a search box, and foods grouped by brand, each tagged family, label or a database, with its phe per 100 g.
the pantry searched for rice: a low-protein short grain rice at 11 mg phe per 100 g above a jasmine rice at 333.3 mg, each tagged with where its numbers came from.

your pantry

every food your family eats lives in one place. open any food and see its nutrients, all of them, not just phe. if a number is off, or your clinic gave you a better one, change it. it's your pantry, so the numbers are yours. every food tells you where its numbers came from: a database, a package scan, or your family. when the package doesn't print phe, rarewell works it out and marks it so you know.

scan label: six parts of the package to photograph — barcode, nutrition facts, front, size, servings per container and ingredients.
a scanned food, fruit bites, tagged label scan, with phenylalanine, protein, calories, fat, carbohydrates, fiber and sugar per pack and per 100 g.

scan the package

see something at the store you want your kid to try? take a few photos of the package and rarewell builds the food for you. save it to your pantry, log it at dinner. no typing in numbers off a label.

a recipe's serving info — yield 6, total batch weight 742.8 g, total phe 530.5 mg, serving size 65 g — and its ingredients with their phe.
today's breakfast: applesauce muffins, a batch, 100 g and 4.8 mg, opened to show eight ingredients with their weights and phe.

recipes and batches

make the recipe once, with every ingredient in it. then cook a batch on sunday and log a portion whenever they eat it. rarewell keeps track of what's in each serving, so a muffin on wednesday is one tap, not a math problem.

full nutrition for one day: phenylalanine at least 792.6 mg against an 800 mg allowance, then protein, calories and fat, each showing how many logged items it was counted from.
the protein detail for the same day: 24.5 g, listing the foods that contributed, from formula at 10 g down to a slice of sourdough at 0.9 g.

the whole day, not just phe

phe matters, but so does everything else they eat. see the whole day in one place: protein, calories, fat, all of it. tap any nutrient and see which foods it came from. and when a food is missing a number, rarewell tells you instead of pretending.

the health tab for one child: formula, medications and supplements, each showing how many of today's doses are done, then blood levels and wellness.
the today screen further down: formula 4 of 4 doses, a medication at 2 of 3 and a supplement at 1 of 1, each with minus and plus buttons, then sleep.

not just food

formula, medication, supplements, all in the same log. one place for everything that goes into your kid's day.

the day's wellness: sleep good, a nap, mood sick, symptoms headache and belly sick, and a short note.

how the day went

sleep, naps, mood, symptoms and a note, all optional.

“day was okay but she wasn't feeling good in the mornings.”

it's easier to have it written down than to remember it at clinic.

a family member's page with a role picker: admin, caregiver, helper or viewer.

built for the whole family

one family, everyone on the same page. add both parents, a grandparent, the babysitter — each with their own login and their own role. everyone logs to the same day, so the meal dad recorded at lunch is already there when mom checks after school.

tracking more than one kid? each has their own limit, their own log, and their own history — under one plan.

copy yesterday: breakfast at 236.1 mg and a morning snack at 28.6 mg, each with buttons for the meal slot it should copy to.
find a meal, recents tab: today's lunch and breakfast and yesterday's snack, each with its phe total.

log a meal in a few taps

most days look like yesterday. copy a whole meal forward and choose which slot it lands in, or pick from what you logged recently. each meal shows its phe before you add it.

blood levels: two readings from a state lab filter card, each with phe, tyr and the ratio.
one reading in detail: phenylalanine 254, tyrosine 31, ratio 8.19, and the diet target at the time the sample was collected.
Wellie, calm and content

blood levels beside the diet

keep every blood spot result in one list: phe, tyrosine and the phe/tyr ratio, with the lab it came from. each reading remembers what the diet target was the day the sample was taken.

reports: pdf or csv, with switches for phe and nutrients, meals, foods and recipes used, blood draws, and formula and prescriptions.
Wellie jumping for joy

reports for your clinic

export a pdf or a csv and choose what goes in: phe and nutrients, meals, foods and recipes used, blood draws, formula and prescriptions.

built-in food databases

rarewell comes with food databases already built in, so you can search, find, and save to your pantry without building everything from scratch. pick the ones that fit your family, with databases for where you live.

data sources: four food databases, each with a switch and a plain description of how its phenylalanine is known.
